Hally

Hi Y'all!

Just wanted to tell you that I am so happy and healthy in my new home and to thank the Slaymans so much for taking such good care of me and loving me enough to see that I had a forever home of love.

My new Nanna and Poppy (that's what the cute little human playmate, Jackson, who hangs around here a lot calls them) named me officially Halleluyah!, 'cause that's how happy they were when they found me. They are still that happy, but just call me Hally now for short. It saves time -which is good- 'cause I keep them pretty busy.

They bought me a real Cadillac of a doggie car seat, 'cause I like to GO and Nanna can get a bit weary holding me while I flip here and there trying not to miss anything that goes by.  I really try to keep them from going without me - I know the house door that goes  to the car and I can tell when they are getting ready to leave, so I've figured out that if I lie down in front of that door and look real pitiful it just kills them to have to pick me up and put me in my room and leave without me.  So, I figure a few more times of this and they'll be taking me to Sunday School and Church, restaurants, grocery,  dinner parties.....you know - everywhere, every time!!! I guess because I have been bounced around a few times in my life,
I really do try to keep them in sight at all times - and they like that, except the aforementioned guilt I inflict on them when they leave me at home - and I'm working on that.  The term "velcro dog" was coined for me.

I try to do everything they want - they're pretty easy to please. But just to keep them on their toes, I potty in the house now and then.  They have read GOD DOG, BAD DOG and they are going to potty training class next week.  They want me 100%, and bless their hearts, they try so hard to get me to do it THEIR way without damaging my self esteem or physchie - I don't know whether to laugh at them or cry for them!  They don't have the heart to confine me in the house when they're here...'cause I give them that
pitiful look I told you about....so, it will just take a bit more time for us to agree on this issue.

I have a 10 year old cat that I'm trying to teach to act  more like a dog.  I figure if I just treat him like one.....you know, wrestle and run and jump with and on him, he'll eventually get it.   He's learning, and pretty good natured about it, for an old cat.  Now, if I can just get him
to bark..........

I'm taking Nanna and Poppy to Basic Obedience Classes next week for 8 weeks.  They are doing pretty well, but there are just some fine points I want to make sure they understand......such as perhaps providing me with a booster chair for the dinner table so I won't have to actually jump up and walk around on it in order to eat from their plates......and how to maintain proper posture and stride when walking in fluffy bedroom slippers while my teeth are clamped onto same.  I figure they are not too old to learn, so I'm really looking forward to the classes.

I love you, Jackie and Bill,

Hally

Pooh Bear

In early February our 4 year old Bichon Frise died suddenly of a heart attack.  Jazzi was a much loved member of our family.  After several weeks of grieving, I started my search for a Bichon that needed a home. Although I was open to a lot of breeds, the Bichon is the one that most fits in with our family at this time.  This web site allowed me to search by breed specific as well as location and shelter.  I was able to gather specific  information about each dog and then called the shelters directly to inquire more.  I found our "Pooh Bear" at the Western Kentucky Rescue.   He had been through a lot before he was rescued and still has so much love to give.  He is great with our 2 young daughters, our Maltese mix and our Grey shorthaired cat.  It is as if he were meant to be with us.  I never would have found him if not for Petfinder.  I am extremely grateful to Petfinder and Western Kentucky Rescue for bringing us together.

Thank you and please know that I will spread  the word to everyone I know about the great work you are all doing.

 Sincerely, Nancy Mudd

Peppi

I wanted to let you know how fortunate I feel that I by chance came across the wonderful service that you offer. It's almost a miracle that on the day that I called the animal shelter to see if they ever got in any toy poodles that you were there. The lady said, "The lady who knows all about poodles is right here". Then when I talked with you, and told you what I was looking for you felt that Lucas and I could be a good match.

I'll never forget the day I met you and I saw him for the first time. I knew then that we would bond and we sure have. Lucas has been such a joy to have in our home. He is such a loving little guy. He likes every body and everybody loves him. My neighbor even comes over to get him every now and then just to visit with him. I just want to thank you for the opportunity to give this little guy a home. He sure has brought a lot of fun, love, and happiness in to our home.

Sincerely, Kim Parker

POPPY

He has become such a part of the family!  He doesn't like being crated too much, but it's Clint's job to let him out when we have left the house and return.  He about gave John a heart attack on day 3.  John opened the garage door to put everyone in the car (including Poppy).  He thought he would stay close, but he was wrong!  Poppy took off down the street, about 4-5 houses down the hill and almost to the next subdivision!!!   John took out after him, left Clint standing in the yard, carried Poppy back home. The first thing Clint said is, "Dad, you should have put him on a leash." Clint won't let us open the front door or garage door without checking to see where Poppy is and if he needs his leash.  John is amazed that Poppy sits so still to have his leash put on.  We are teaching him commands.   We are beginning with "sit".  We had a golden retriever that would bury his bones in the house (use his nose to cover the bone with invisible dirt). Poppy does THE SAME THING!  When visitors come to the door, he greets them with a warm, moist nose - we love this!  Guests aren't met with a barking, protective pet, but one that welcomes them.  Our neighbor and her little 2 yr old son came down last night and Poppy slowly went up to greet them. The son was not afraid and began petting him!  Poppy even knows how to approach so people won't be afraid of him!

I cannot tell you how much in love we are.  He is the perfect addition to our family and Clint reminds us that there are 4 in our home now.  He now wears a little red bandana around his neck, he looks so cute.

BETTY BOOP

Well, you know what Betty looked like when you brought her to me. Attached is a picture of her since she's been groomed.   She was matted pretty bad in some areas, so they had to take her pretty short.   However, she looks like a totally different dog!  The groomer said Betty looked full blooded, or at least 90%, poodle.  She has great lines and features, as you will see. But the best thing about Betty Boop is her personality! My husband and I have both fallen in love with her.  She is obedient (except for hopping on the beds when we're not looking to hide her favorite stuffed toys), she is housebroken (only one minor accident the second day), and very, very cuddly. She has three favorite lambs wool squeaky toys, that she carries around all the time and plays with.

It seems as if she has been with us forever, not just one and a half weeks! When we're at home, she is by one of us always.   She sleeps in our bedroom at night on her very own bed, and wakes me about 6:00 am. or so to go outside.  Once, when I was extremely sleepy, she wanted to go outside. When I didn't get up right away, she got very insistent!  This afternoon she wanted to go outside, and low and behold, she brought me her leash!  That was the ultimate surprise.

I have to be careful when I get into the shower, because she sneaks my undergarments and takes them to her bed to lie on. She eats well, is on a regular routine now, and has become a very important part of our family. We're putting up a fence around the back yard to keep her from running off to play with someone.  She is so friendly, that she wants to love on everyone!

Needless to say, we can't thank you enough for helping us bring such joy into our lives.   If you ever need a reference, please feel free to call upon me.

And, please, come by sometime when you are in Louisville to visit Betty Boop and her new family.

TUTU

TuTu

Aunt Jackie, I couldn't understand why my Mommy was so sad until she told me what happened while we were taking on one of our long walks. I started walking really slow just thinking about you and what had happened to me last year in July and August. I was picked up as a stray somewhere in North Carolina and taken to a shelter. I was there several weeks when I overheard some people talking (I am somewhat nosy). They said that they were going to have to put me down. They said I wasn't put down sooner because of my sweet, loving, & inquisitive disposition, but  because I didn't wag my tail & kept it between my legs all the time, there might be something wrong. I was just so lonely.

Several days later, I overheard them talking again. This time they said that someone named Jackie had called several times telling them not to do anything to me that someone would be there to pick me up. Oh boy I was finally getting out of there! They did come and they took me to my forever home. I was really worried that my new Mom would not like me as I had a "very bad" hair day and after seeing me in such a shape she might not want me. I was very skinny and had lots of mats & tangles on my legs & tail.  My coat was sheared to the skin in places & I had a skin disorder. All this worry was for nothing. When my new Mom and some other lady saw me they gave me bunches & bunches of hugs. Oh, how happy I was. Later after getting home, I found out the other lady was you Aunt Jackie.

I also thought about what all you did to locate me & how you worked to get me out of that shelter right before my final day. And then how you and my new forever Mom drove to Chattanooga to get me. You placed me in a great home where I get lots of loves and I play with many toys and as my Mommy says, "run like a race dog". I thought of all the good & fun times we had when I came to your house for my vacation & stayed with you & Uncle Bill while my Mommy was out of town & when you & Uncle Bill would come to Mommy's gift shop to see me. It was also so much fun when you & Chardonnay & Mom & me would go on our Wed. night outings to obedience school. The treats you made were soooo good. Wish Mommy would get the recipe. During class Chardy & I were so laid back & relaxed, sometimes we would even go to sleep while waiting our turn to do our school thing. I can hear you laughing the time I sat down and tried to shake hands with Mom when I was supposed to be watching her & then the time I just got tired & sat down when I was doing one of the exercises, walking on command. Mom kept walking & I kept scooting on that slick floor. I was really being just a bit stubborn.  You know Chardy & I were quick learners & sometimes we acted like we were bored. I would like to continue with the advanced class & hope Uncle Bill will take Chardy. He & I are such big buddies. It won't be the same without you there, but know you will be there in spirit looking down & smiling.

Aunt Jackie, you are a very special angel. I know you are happy & in all your glory helping & playing with all the fuzzy faced furry babies just like you did while down here on earth. One day when it is my turn to cross Rainbow Bridge I'll come running across wiggling my backend like I do when I see someone I love. That's why you & Mommy nicknamed me "Wiggle Butt".

Love you Jackie.       Tail Wags & Wet Kisses, TuTu

Moose & Sasha

I wanted to give you an update on Moose and Sasha.  I adopted Moose and Sasha on August 10th.  They have brought so much joy and love into my life, they are the sweetest kids I could have ever dreamed of having the honor of adopting.  Both of them adjusted really quickly into their new home and have slept in my bed since the first night.  They love their "cuddle time" in the morning before we get out of bed.  They are always up before me just waiting for me to start to stir and as soon as I open my eyes I am   smothered with kisses.

Sasha has started wearing bows to keep the hair out of her eyes.  Moose seems to have a natural part so the hair doesn't get in his eyes.  They both love to go on walks and rides in the car.

At first, I let them have the run of the house while I was at work, but, they started to have accidents in the house and started to chew on furniture.  As cute as it was coming home to them sleeping or watching for me in the window when I came home, my vet talked me into crate training them.   They both have their own "rooms" now.  Sasha adjusted very well, she really likes it.  She learned "in your room" after the first day.   Moose loves to play and I think she would rather not be bothered during the day. Moose on the other hand, still needs coaching.  He gives me the stubborn Lhasa attitude even with bribery.

Moose is a playful dog who loves everybody.  He is very gentle and very loving and playful.  He loves to play fetch and tug.  He is the biggest sweetheart, he loves to sleep with his head on my leg or on the pillow next to me.  He loves having his belly rubbed.  He really enjoys "dressing up" in bandanas around his neck.  I had bought a Halloween bandanna for him and a witch hat for Sasha for Halloween.  He ended up getting them both because Sasha didn't like wearing the hat.  He loved prancing around with it on, he was sooo cute!!

Moose & Sasha sharing a toy

Sasha is my watch dog.  She is very leery of strangers.  She was terrified of strangers at first and would hide on my lap and bark.  She has adjusted well though and is much friendlier when we are out and now lets strangers pet her if she is away from her home.  At home she is still leery and barks and takes awhile to adjust (Lhasa trait).  She is not scared anymore, she holds her ground.  She loves lots of attention.  She can run really fast and is very active.  She loves to play with toys and she loves to play tug.   She plays fetch sometimes but, more so likes to steal the toys from Moose and go off and chew them on her own.  They are classic brother and sister and play well together.

We are working on learning some new tricks.   They are learning the basics of "sit" and "shake hands" right now.  They are both very intelligent dogs. I can't express to you how much enjoyment and love Moose and Sasha have brought into my life.  They have become very popular members of our family.  I enjoy spoiling them rotten.  My parents love when I bring over the "grandpuppies".  Of course, they already have their own stockings with their names on them ready to be hung on the mantle at Christmas to be filled with pigs ears and other favorite goodies. I can't thank you enough for letting me bring them home to their forever family.

Lhasa kisses,
Michelle, Moose and Sasha
